Planning and pricing

Very often a fence is an integral feature of a landscaping design rather than a thing off on its own, so it pays to plan the two together. A short run of cedar is one job and a long estate fence with masonry columns is quite another, so the ranges below are a starting point and not a quote.

Wooden fence enclosing a planted garden bed

Very often, an integral feature of a landscaping design will include fencing. As an added convenience, Nature’s Friends also offer fence contractor services, including beautiful wood fence installation or fence repair as one of their professional services. This is enormously convenient for our clients; you already know and trust Cliff and his team, and you can rest easy knowing you’re getting quality work on time.

Our wood fences come in a variety of designs, from privacy to picket. Our installers have 10+ years professional fence installation experience and are licensed and insured. We will discuss your options for various wood fence styles and gates, share our design ideas, measure, and give you a free quote and time estimate to perform the work. Cliff’s years of landscape and yard experience mean that he can advise you on the pros and cons of all of the different fence materials to help you make a choice that you will love for years to come.

  • Reinforce leaning sections
  • Replace or install additional gates

Types of Wood Fence

  • Picket fence: Usually front yard or sides, serves as a decorative border
  • Lattice fence: Can be tall or garden size, decorative look or used as a screen
  • Post and rail fence: Country look, serves as a decorative border
  • Vertical board: Most privacy, usually in back yard, keeps pets in

Pros and Cons of Wood Fencing

Wood fencing is extremely popular in Maryland, because of the natural materials that incorporate into the popular native look of most landscape designs.

Affordability: Wood fence installation is the least expensive of the quality fence styles.  Cedar wood for fences have a much longer life with less warping in boards.

Durability: You can expect your wood fence to last 20 years or more if properly cared for. Our materials are cedar or pressure treated. It should be sealed every few years to maintain look and longevity.

Damage and Rot are the only cons with wood fencing. Properly maintained sealed fences will withstand the elements better than a neglected wood fence for many years.

Check the line before choosing the fence

For a new fence under county authority, Montgomery County DPS requires a permit and a site plan. A permitted fence replaced in the same kind, height and location is an exception. Corner lots and easements need a closer look. Rockville has its own application; association review may be separate. See the Chevy Chase page if your address is there.

A fence that belongs with the landscape

As an added convenience Nature's Friends also offers fence work, which is enormously handy for our clients, since you already know and trust Cliff and his team. But you can also hire one firm for the fence and another for the beds, though having us do both means it all fits together across the grading and the plantings of your yard.

Styles we install

  • Cedar and premium wood privacy fencing
  • Picket, lattice-top and post-and-rail
  • Ornamental aluminum for a clean, low-maintenance line
  • Custom estate fencing with stone or brick columns
  • Gates, including wide gates for equipment and vehicle access

Where the money goes on a premium fence

Each of these styles has positives along with drawbacks, and here at Nature's Friends we can offer some insight into which one suits your yard. On the higher end you are paying for the better material, but also for the part nobody sees, the posts set properly and sunk below the frost line so the whole run stays straight and solid for decades.

Good to Know

Fencing — FAQ

The professionals here at Nature's Friends Landscaping would be pleased to measure the yard for you and turn that into a real number, since the length and the height and the gates all move it. A cedar privacy fence is the most common choice, and the range in the guide above is where most residential runs tend to start.

For a new fence under Montgomery County's permitting authority, you normally need a fence permit and a plat showing where it will go. Replacing a previously permitted fence with the same kind, height and location is an exception. A fence along a property line or near a corner or easement needs a closer look, and Rockville and other municipalities have their own approval paths. Check the parcel and any association rules before the first post hole is dug.

You have a few to choose from, so you need to know what matters most to you. Cedar gives you the privacy and the warm, natural look though it wants a bit of care now and again, while ornamental aluminum is nearly maintenance-free and keeps your sightlines open, and we will walk you through the trade-offs for your particular yard.

We do, and a fence isn't for tearing out at the first sign of trouble, so don't let a leaning section or a tired gate scare you into a full replacement. If the run is mostly still sound and just wants some attention here and there, we will tell you that plainly and handle the repair or the gate work for you.
