Planning and pricing

When you are trying to price a patio the first thing to evaluate is the space itself, and then the stone you have in mind, because both of those have a big impact on where the number lands. A small paver walkway is one job and a full outdoor living space with a kitchen and a fire feature is quite another, so the ranges below are a starting point and not a quote.

Curved stone border beside flowers and a lawn

With Maryland’s temperate climate, our outdoor space is our living space. Create your own private haven for relaxing, living, and entertaining. Talk to Cliff about how you’d like to be spending your time in your yard: cooking out with guests, quiet time at a firepit, reading and reflecting in a hammock on a deck, or a simple walkway from the door to a gazebo or driveway. Cliff has an eye for utilizing your existing features to your advantage, such as flat or shady areas, or natural slopes for terraces. He has ideas on how to stretch a budget, such as using gravel in some areas, or moving existing plants for new borders. He can advise where to splurge, and where to save, with hardscape materials such as pavers, stones, bricks, wood, or manufactured materials.

Brainstorm with Cliff and his team for a plethora of ideas, and an objective opinion on the pros and cons of various hardscaping design elements and materials.

Areas to Consider

Patios, Terraces, and Decks

Create a space to function as an additional living room outside. Choose from a variety of natural materials, such as flagstone, pavers , brick, concrete, travertine,  or a wooden or composite deck. A sloped yard can be transformed into a multi-level terrace. The ground must be leveled with existing grass or vegetation removed. Pavers that are installed professionally will fit tightly together with a concreted border for longevity, and sealed. Consider including covered areas, kitchens, grills, fire pits, built in benches, a mix of natural stones or brick.

Walkways

Adding a rock path or stone paver walkway is a small detail that enhances the entire look and usability of the yard. Do you have a well worn path in your yard already? Spruce it up with some pavers. Or add a space for grilling, or a walkway to your back gate. Cliff will share with you some ideas for adding some depth and detail to your landscape design.

Driveways

A driveway does not have to be plain poured concrete or asphalt. Some attention to detail when installing your next driveway changes the entire look of your property, and doesn’t have to break the bank. Talk to Cliff about ideas for transforming your curb appeal with bricks or pavers.

Retaining Walls

Custom retaining walls may be practical or aesthetic. If you have a sloped yard, they may be recommended to prevent erosion and soil loss. Aesthetically, they are incorporated into hardscape designs to carve out additional areas, seating, or garden beds. Materials are typically concrete blocks,  concrete,  or other natural stones, modular block, or occasionally wood or railroad ties.

Walls, paving and the water beneath them

For a retaining wall, height is not the only permit question. Montgomery County’s wall guidance also addresses surcharge loads, tiered walls, soils and lot lines. Its homeowner overview describes wall exemptions differently, so check a particular plan with DPS rather than relying on a single height rule. For a qualifying permeable-pavement project, RainScapes may be worth investigating outside its excluded cities. Start with drainage if the site already holds water.

Your outdoor living space

With the climate we have in Maryland the yard is really our living space for a good part of the year, so the place to start is with how you picture spending your time out there. Talk to Cliff about whether that is cooking out with guests, quiet evenings by a fire, or a simple walkway from the door up to a gazebo, because the answer ends up shaping everything that follows.

What we build

  • Natural-stone and premium paver patios
  • Walkways, steps and entry features
  • Retaining and seat walls, built to drain and last
  • Outdoor kitchens, fire pits and fireplaces
  • Full outdoor living rooms that tie the whole yard together

Where premium materials earn their keep

Different materials have different properties, and these have a big impact on how the patio responds to our freeze and thaw. Natural stone and a good concrete paver both do well here, but you can't just set them down and assume they will be fine, the base and the drainage underneath them matter every bit as much as the surface on top. That is why we set a patio on eight to ten inches of compacted stone and not straight on the ground, because our winter frost reaches down close to thirty inches and a thin base will heave right up with it.

Good to Know

Hardscaping — FAQ

The professionals here at Nature's Friends Landscaping would be pleased to help you settle on the stone and put a real number to the patio you are picturing. A small paver path and a large natural stone patio are two very different projects, and each of these has positives along with drawbacks, so the range in the guide above is where to start.

Don't try to lay a patio over ground that holds water, it just won't work for long, and getting that groundwork right is a good deal of what we do. Natural stone and a good concrete paver both hold up well here, but the base and the drainage underneath them matter every bit as much as the surface you can see on top.

We do the work ourselves, from the digging right through to the last joint, and here at Nature's Friends we can offer some insight into the wall and the patio both. That is a good part of why the different pieces, the grading and the drainage and the wall and the patio, end up working together rather than being separate jobs set side by side. A retaining wall may need a permit because of its height, the weight it supports, its position on the lot or the ground beneath it. Check the plan with the permitting authority before work starts.

You can add one later, although it is not the simplest thing to retrofit once the patio is down, so a wise move would be to plan for it now even if you build it a season or two on. Before we set the patio we can run the base and the utilities the feature will want, and then when the day comes the piece goes in clean rather than being torn back up.
